Courses

SCC Academy offers three different course formats, allowing learners to tailor their studies around other commitments. All courses include the same materials and learning experiences, differing only in the length that the course takes to complete.

In addition to learning the fundamentals of computing, individuals will be encouraged to take part in projects and a range of energising activities designed to promote teamwork and essential social skills needed for employment.

During breaks, learners will have the opportunity to enjoy some downtime with their cohort in the breakout area where refreshments are available.

Acquire the Essential Digital Skills in an extended timeframe. This course runs from 9:30 to 12:00 or 13:00 – 15:30, Monday to Thursday over the period of a 10 weeks. During the classes, learners will be taught the fundamentals of computing and refine their soft skills.

What happens on the course?

  • Understand computing fundamentals, including using a mouse, keyboard and how to save and retrieve information.
  • Understand files and folders; create, read, update and delete information (including uninstalling applications) using File Explorer and other applications.
  • Understand the Windows OS; using Settings, Control Panel and how to update a PC.
  • Understand the Internet and how to use a web browser (including history and bookmarking) to access the web.
  • Understand communication online. Using Outlook and Teams to communicate using both text and video conferencing. Exploring the different applications in Outlook, including saving to OneDrive.
  • Understand email; sending and receive information including attachments.
  • Understand how to complete online forms.
  • Understand online transactional services, shopping online for both services and goods, paying for items online using PayPal or a card. Using online banking.
  • Understand malware and digital wellbeing, including how using a computer can affect one’s own health. Researching different forms of malware.
  • Understand how to keep one’s information safe; ways to prevent a PC being compromised.
  • Understand desktop publishing – Word.
  • Understand spreadsheets – Excel.
  • Understand social media and how to use if effectively and safely.

The IT User Skills Level 2 course is designed for learners who are using Information Technology within their job or plan to pursue a career requiring IT skills. These short courses run from 10:00-15:00, Monday to Friday for three weeks. This qualification is suitable for learners using IT systems in a wide range of job roles.

What happens on the course?

  • Unit 1: Using IT to increase productivity
    • Section 1: Be able to plan and select which IT tools and systems are best suited to completion of an identified task.
    • Section 2: Be able to identify any restrictions or constraints that may affect how a task can be completed using IT tools and systems.
    • Section 3: Be able to use IT tools and systems to complete an identified task.
    • Section 4: Be able to review approach to using IT tools and systems.
    • Section 5: Be able to adapt their approach as a result of their experiences using IT tools and systems to complete a task.
  • Unit 2: IT software fundamentals
    • Section 1: Select and use appropriate software applications to meet needs and solve problems.
    • Section 2: Enter, develop, combine and format different types of information to suit its meaning and purpose.
    • Section 3: Present information in ways that are fit for purpose and audience.
    • Section 4: Evaluate the selection and use of IT tools and facilities to present information.
  • Unit 3: IT security for users
    • Section 1: Use appropriate methods to minimise security risks to IT systems and data.
  • Unit 4: Presentation software
    • Section 1: Input and combine text and other information within presentation slides.
    • Section 2: Use presentation software tools to structure, edit and format slide sequences.
    • Section 3: Prepare slideshow for presentation.
  • Unit 5: Spreadsheet software
    • Section 1: Use a spreadsheet to enter, edit and organise numerical and other data.
    • Section 2: Select and use appropriate formulas and data analysis tools to meet requirements.
    • Section 3: Select and use tools and techniques to present and format spreadsheet information.

Learners are able to develop their knowledge and learn practical skills relating to various facets of cyber security, which can be used to seek employment or proceed into study at a higher level. Courses run one day per week for 30 weeks.
